We’re back after the holidays and excited to announce the first Prairie Postgres meetup of 2026, taking place on January 13. This event kicks off a new year of PostgreSQL learning and community engagement for the Illinois Prairie PostgreSQL User Group.

The meetup will feature Ryan Booze, Solutions Engineer at pganalyze, presenting a practical session on PostgreSQL logging and query optimization. Attendees will learn how to configure and use built-in PostgreSQL tools such as pg_stat_statements and auto_explain to analyze query performance, identify bottlenecks, and improve database reliability.

This meetup is ideal for Postgres developers, database engineers, and DBAs who want to start 2026 with actionable insights into PostgreSQL performance monitoring and optimization. We look forward to welcoming the community back and beginning the year with a strong technical session. Registration & more details here.

We look forward to seeing you at the meetup – Let’s start the year strong with great conversations and learning!

  • Final Meetup of 2025-November 18th

    Final Meetup of 2025-November 18th

On November 18, the Illinois Prairie PostgreSQL User Group will host its final meetup of the year featuring Jay Miller, Staff Developer Advocate at Aiven and founder of Black Python Devs.

Jay will discuss why many application developers hesitate to work with databases and how embracing PostgreSQL can improve AI-driven features, reliability, and developer confidence. Drawing from his work building a vibe-coded application, he will share practical insights to help “application-first” developers feel empowered not intimidated by the database layer.

This session is an excellent opportunity for developers of all backgrounds to learn how PostgreSQL can enhance modern software development. Register here.

🎉 Prairie Postgres Celebrates Its First Anniversary On October 15th— bringing the PostgreSQL Community together!

Prairie Postgres, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the PostgreSQL community across the Midwest, is proud to celebrate its first anniversary on October 15th!

Over the past year, Prairie Postgres has brought together developers, database administrators, researchers, and organizations that rely on PostgreSQL — through meetups, educational events, and open collaboration. Our mission is to foster innovation, knowledge sharing, and community growth within the Postgres ecosystem.

As we look ahead to another exciting year — including the upcoming PG DATA 2026 Conference in Chicago — we invite companies and Postgres-driven organizations to support our mission. Your donations and sponsorships directly help us organize community events, promote Postgres education, and create more opportunities for connection and learning.

  • Illinois Prairie PUG Meetup on October 15th

Illinois Prairie PUG Meetup on October 15th

Our next Prairie Postgres meetup will take place on October 15 at the DRW Training Center in Chicago. We are excited to welcome Henrietta “Hettie” Dombrovskaya, Database Architect at DRW, researcher, and co-author of PostgreSQL Query Optimization (Apress, 2024).

Hettie will deliver “Long Queries and the Art of Full Scan”, a talk that explores why some analytical queries inevitably take time, why neglecting report performance is a dangerous practice, and how to build reports the right way before they turn into performance bottlenecks. This session is also a test run of her upcoming presentation at PG Conf EU in Riga later this month.

With more than four decades of academic and industry experience, Hettie brings deep expertise in PostgreSQL and a passion for sharing knowledge with the community. This is a valuable opportunity to learn practical techniques to keep queries efficient as your data grows.

We look forward to seeing you there—please RSVP in advance if you plan to attend! See More details about the meetup here.

  • Long Queries and the Art of Full Scan on October 15

Long Queries and the Art of Full Scan on October 15

On October 15, the Illinois Prairie PostgreSQL User Group will host a special meetup with Henrietta “Hettie” Dombrovskaya, Database Architect at DRW and longtime PostgreSQL community leader. This session is a sneak preview of her new talk that she will present later this month at PG Conf EU in Riga.

Hettie’s presentation, “Long Queries and the Art of Full Scan,” explores a common but often overlooked challenge: analytical queries that grow slower as data volumes increase. While it’s tempting to dismiss infrequently run reports as unimportant, ignoring performance can turn a query that once took minutes into one that drags on for hours or even days. In this talk, Hettie will share strategies for recognizing when full scans are unavoidable and for building reports that remain efficient and scalable over time.

With more than four decades of academic and industry experience, Hettie has contributed significantly to the PostgreSQL ecosystem, from co-authoring PostgreSQL Query Optimization (Apress, 2024) to creating training databases and performance tools used worldwide. This meetup offers a unique chance to learn from her expertise in an intimate, community-focused setting—before the talk debuts on an international stage.

Illinois Prairie PUG Meetup on September 10th

Our next event is on September 10, 2025, in Chicago, featuring Doğaç Eldenk presenting “Start with a Clean Slate: Setting Up Integration Tests with PostgreSQL.”

Originally delivered at PG Day Chicago, this talk shares high-performance strategies for cleaning and resetting PostgreSQL databases between integration tests — boosting speed, ensuring consistency, and increasing developer productivity. Whether you’re a backend engineer, QA specialist, or just passionate about database best practices, this is one you won’t want to miss.

Please don’t forget to register, and check out the full event details here.

  • Meetup in Chicago – Learn Integration Testing Best Practices on September 10

Meetup in Chicago – Learn Integration Testing Best Practices on September 10

Did you enjoy PG Day Chicago in April? We did too! And if you missed it, don’t worry — we’ve brought one of the talks back for you, and you can catch it live with us on September 10.

In this session, Doğaç Eldenk will dive into smart strategies for keeping PostgreSQL databases squeaky clean between integration test runs. Forget the slow, clunky cleanups that slow down your testing pipeline — Doğaç will walk us through a language-agnostic, high-performance approach using PL/pgSQL functions, triggers, and the information schema. This method helps developers get faster, more consistent tests without a full codebase refactor.

Whether you’re a backend engineer, QA specialist, or just love geeking out over database internals, you’ll leave with practical tools to level up your test reliability and productivity. So mark your calendar, bring your questions, and get ready for a deep-dive that’s as insightful as it is actionable!
